¡@Age of Urbanization

The 20th Century has been undoubtedly the age of urbanization through industrialization and civilization from the global viewpoint as well as from the domestic standpoint. Cities created by civilization of agricultural societies have invented order and rules within which individuals can live with the society harmoniously. Therefore, the society of each age has its own harmony with nature and its cultural values in its life. However, these order and rules were too restrictive and oppressive from individual point of view.

Capitalism supported by technological and industrial development presented ideological freedom which was accepted by many societies and thus rapid economic development was made. As a result, cities have grown to an enormous size based on economy and efficiency of industrial society and housing of individual needs. Although their components are made by industrialization and standardization, they make up cities and towns with little mutual respect. We feel that the present condition of cities are far from their slogans of amenity and richness.

¡@Towards More Matured Urban Society

Times are changing now. It is largely believed that true richness will not be achieved by industrialization alone and that creativity and mutual respect is equally important to realize a truly rich society.

However, mechanism to achieve such social goals is missing from the present cities. Cities have space for many people to create, use and maintain. It is not possible to produce urban space with amenity and humanity without collaboration of governments, businesses and citizens. It is only after we acquire such urban space that the industrial society creates culture of cities.
